How to Order Like a Local at El Tapatio
Forget the fancy dining rooms downtown. The best gorditas in East Naples are in this unassuming roadside motel from the 1970’s.
Some restaurants make you feel welcome before you even get out of the car.
El Tapatio is not one of them.
In fact, if you've ever driven past it, you've probably had exactly the same thought everyone else has.
"There's no way I'm eating there."
I hear that all the time.
And honestly?
The first time I saw it, I wasn't exactly racing for the parking lot either.
From the outside, it still looks like what it used to be: a roadside motel from another era, painted a shade of coral pink that probably felt fashionable sometime around 1974. It's a little worn. A little quirky. If buildings could have wrinkles, this one has earned every one of them.
Then you open the door.
Suddenly you're not thinking about the parking lot anymore.
You're sitting in what used to be the motel lobby while Jessie, Inocencia or Veronica walks over with a smile, a basket of warm tortilla chips and fresh salsa.
Just like that...
...you're in.
That's the funny thing about places like El Tapatio.
The hardest part isn't deciding what to order.
It's convincing yourself to walk through the door.
Once you do, you'll wonder why you waited so long.
Now let's talk about what you're going to eat.
If this is your very first visit, don't overcomplicate it.
Order the guacamole.
Then order the gorditas.
And no...
They're not the ones from Taco Bell.
Not even close.
If you've never had a gordita before, imagine a thick corn cake that's lightly crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, sliced open and filled with your choice of meat, vegetables and plenty of cheese. Around here, I jokingly call them Mexican hot pockets because somehow everyone instantly understands what I'm talking about.
If you're wondering where to start, here's our go-to-favorites followed by the list of “I’ve never even ordered it because, what’s the point?”
1. Spicy pork. Do you like the red salsa on the table? The pork is seasoned with that salsa.
2. Cactus. Yes…cactus. Trust me. This vegetarian option is our second favorite! Made from the pads of the prickly.
3. Steak (Carne Asada). Finely chopped tender steak, served with cilantro and onion.
4. Barbacoa “BBQ”. It’s not seasoned like American BBQ. It just describes how the meat is slowly cooked.
5. Chicken. Shredded chicken breast lightly grilled with some of that fresh Pico de Gallo.
6. Chicharron (Pork Skin). NOT crunchy, but very soft. Stay away if you have texture issues.
7. Beans & Cheese. Got a fussy kid or pick relative with you? There’s nothing to hate here.
If you had told me years ago that I'd be recommending cactus to people visiting Naples, I probably would've laughed too.
That's what El Tapatio does.
It has a habit of making you rethink things.
Not just about food.
About assumptions.
The places we almost skip.
The neighborhoods we drive past.
The restaurants we decide aren't for us before we've even opened the front door.
Paradise Food Tours has taught me that some of the best meals are hiding in plain sight.
El Tapatio reminds me of that every single time I visit.
Now when someone tells me,
"I never would've stopped here."
I just smile.
I know exactly what's waiting on the other side of that little pink motel door.
And pretty soon...
They will too.
Know Before You Go
It’s small. Great for takeout, but no reservations. First come, first serve.
There's a bump in the asphalt of the handicap parking space. Don't trip.
The restroom is outside, to the left of the restaurant. It's "authentic to the era".
It's pronounced "GORE-DEE-TUH". This is not Spanish class, but we want you to order the right thing.
The gorditas come out of the kitchen VERY VERY HOT. Don't burn your mouth. Or your fingers. Have a little patience.
